Comparison between Induction hardeing and traditional ways

Feb. 12, 2025

Induction heating itself is a heating method that converts electrical energy into thermal energy through electromagnetic induction, rapidly heating the surface of metal workpieces. In the field of metal surface treatment, this heating method is commonly used to improve the properties of metal surfaces, increase their wear resistance, corrosion resistance, hardness, and other characteristics.

The most widely used induction heating metal surface treatment process is "induction hardening": induction heating to austenitization and then rapid cooling, forming a hardened layer on the surface. If the target hardened layer is only a few millimeters, it can be quickly cooled using a specialized coolant after heating to the quenching temperature.

Charts below are the comparison of different hardening technology:

          Induction Hardening/Flame Hardeing percentage comparison
IndicatorPercentage ChangeExplanation
Waste Emissions-80%Induction hardening mainly uses electromagnetic induction heating, which produces almost no waste gas and residue,
while flame hardening burns fuel to produce a large amount of waste gas. Therefore, induction hardening greatly reduces waste emissions.
Purchase and Maintenance Costs20%Compared with flame hardening equipment, induction hardening equipment has higher technical content,
and the purchase cost may be slightly higher. At the same time, due to more electrical components, the maintenance cost may also be slightly increased.
Energy Consumption Ratio-30%Induction hardening has high energy utilization rate and high heating efficiency,
while flame hardening has heat loss. Therefore, induction hardening has more advantages in energy consumption ratio.
Efficiency50%Induction hardening has fast heating speed, short quenching cycle and high production efficiency,
while flame hardening has relatively slow heating speed and long quenching cycle. Therefore, induction hardening has obvious improvement in efficiency.

What is induction Heating?

Induction heating is the process of heating an electrically conducting object (usually a metal) by electromagnetic induction, through heat generated in the object by eddy currents. An induction heater consists of induction power supply (induction heater) and inductor (coil) that is a shaped to contour the part, and a work station where the part is held and presented to the coil.
